The Nigeria Customs Service has delivered a significant blow to illegal wildlife trafficking networks, announcing the official handover of seized donkey parts valued at N3.94 billion to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency in Kaduna State.
The massive haul, contained in a statement issued via Customs official X’s handle on Friday, was secured by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, Kaduna, following several coordinated anti-smuggling operations.
“The seizure comprised 700 bags of donkey bones valued at ₦1.86 billion and 2,500 pieces of dried donkey skins valued at ₦2.07 billion. These items were intercepted while being prepared for illicit export, violating both national laws and international conventions like CITES”, the statement read.
The formal handover took place on Tuesday in Kaduna, where Comptroller Aminu Sule, the Customs Area Controller of FOU Zone B, formally presented the exhibits to Mr. Hene Emmanuel, the NESREA State Coordinator.
Sule stressed the socio-economic danger posed by the illegal trade, stating: “Donkeys are essential to rural communities as a source of livelihood and transport. Their indiscriminate slaughter threatens sustainable development. This seizure is a clear warning to traffickers: FOU Zone B will not relent in the fight against environmental crime.”
NESREA State Coordinator, Hene Emmanuel, confirmed receipt of the contraband and commended Customs for the intelligence-led operations.
He assured the public that the agency would take immediate legal steps, noting that “the agency’s primary focus is now on prosecuting the suspects arrested in connection with the seizures to curb the demand that drives the illegal depletion of the nation’s donkey population.”
The handover event, attended by representatives of various security and regulatory agencies, concluded with the formal handover of the donkey parts to NESREA for further action in line with national environmental laws.
