A Sokoto State High Court has sentenced one Gerald Eugene to two years imprisonment for receiving two victims of human trafficking for exploitation.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons disclosed this in a statement on its Facebook page on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the 43-year-old convict was arraigned before Justice Mu’awiya Dahiru on April 15, 2025, where he was found guilty.
The statement added that Eugene was convicted on Monday for the offence which was punishable under the law.
“A Sokoto State High Court presided over by Hon. Justice Mu’awiya Dahiru, has convicted Gerald Eugene (43, male) for receiving two victims of trafficking for exploitation.
The offence is punishable under Section 13(2)(c) of the Trafficking In Persons Act, 2015,” the terse statement read.
It was reported a similar sentencing on February 5, 2019, when A Federal High Court in Osun State sentenced a 29-year-old woman, Sekinat Owolabi, to four years imprisonment for human trafficking.
Owolabi was arraigned, tried and convicted on four counts bothering on human trafficking and organised foreign trips and promotion of prostitution.
Justice Maureen Onyetenu, in her judgment, held that the convict did not deserve any mercy and, hence should serve her jail term at Federal Prison, Ilesa, without an option of a fine.
Onyetenu also held that the convict’s conviction and the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders in society.
