The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, will find out by Friday, August 29, 2025, whether it can proceed with the scheduled local government council elections set for August 30.

This follows the adjournment of a case at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt in a suit filed by the African Democratic Congress, ADC, against RSIEC, the Rivers State Sole Administrator, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and one other party.

The ADC is challenging the legality of the recently appointed RSIEC Chairman and members, constituted by the Sole Administrator, arguing that they lack the power to revalidate the election timetable.

The party also contends that the time frame given for the elections is too short to allow meaningful participation by interested political parties.

During proceedings on Monday, the court entertained motions on jurisdiction, a motion for interlocutory injunction to stop the elections, and a motion for joinder filed by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Counsel to the PDP, former Rivers State Attorney General Zacchaeus Adango, argued that the PDP should be joined in the matter.

His motion, however, was opposed by ADC’s counsel, A. O. Imiete.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Turaki Mohammed, held that joining the PDP was necessary in the interest of fair hearing and granted the motion.

Justice Mohammed then adjourned the case to August 29, 2025, giving the parties 48 hours to exchange their processes.
