A Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday ordered the remand of two women, 25-year-old Loveth Christian and 17-year-old Damilola Basiru, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre over allegations of human trafficking and modern-day slavery.

The pair are facing a two-count charge bordering on trafficking and the exploitation of minors.

Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya declined to take their pleas and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The matter was adjourned to June 30, pending the DPP’s review.

According to the prosecuting officer, Inspector Ayodele Adeosun, the accused committed the offences on April 26 at about 1:30 p.m. in the Ajara Agamathen area of Badagry.

He alleged that the two women unlawfully trafficked two individuals, aged 18 and 15, across international borders to Ghana.

The victims were reportedly sold into conditions resembling slavery, the prosecutor told the court.

Adeosun noted that the alleged actions of the defendants contravened Sections 276 and 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
