The Federal High Court in Lagos, under the leadership of Justice Y. Bogoro, has directed the prompt release of Miss Oluwateniola Omidiji from EFCC custody. The order was issued late Friday evening, on May 3rd, 2024.
On April 26, 2024, operatives of the Commission took Miss Oluwateniola Omidiji, a 19-year-old third-year Nursing student at Babcock University Ilishan-Remo, from the school’s premises. Her arrest stemmed from a business deal her mother, Miss Omoniyi Omidiji, made with Mr. Charles Nwoko in 2020, which turned sour. Miss Omidiji, who was only 16 at the time and asserts she was unaware of the deal, has been in EFCC custody for 11 days.
An investigation revealed that four individuals were appointed directors in a company named Elisto Global Services Limited, which is the focal point of the conflict. These individuals include the applicant’s mother, the investor Mr. Nwoko, the applicant’s brother, and the applicant herself. Amid her exams, Oluwateniola sought relief from the court after EFCC operatives besieged her school and apprehended her.
However, in an urgent application presented in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/759/2024 by her legal representative, Chijioke Emeka, SAN of Auxano Law, Miss Omidiji seeks to enforce her fundamental rights. The Court has ordered EFCC to release the teenager while her case against the Commission is being resolved. Additionally, EFCC has been directed to suspend all actions against Miss Omidiji until the case reaches a verdict. The hearing for the suit has been scheduled for May 21, 2024.
