A man identified as Sodiq Oyewummi has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for stealing electrical cables from the Oke-Afa Wastewater Treatment Plant, a facility managed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office.
The Lagos State government on Saturday said on its official website that Oyewummi’s arrest occurred while he was actively engaged in the theft of cables from the wastewater treatment facility when plant officials intercepted him and handed him over to the Lagos State Taskforce Environmental and Special Offences Court for prosecution.
During his appearance before the court, Oyewummi faced a three-count charge, which included conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, willful damage to government property, and theft of government property.
He pleaded guilty to the first and third charges, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing to 12 months in prison.
Commenting on the development, the General Manager of the LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, highlighted the significance of the swift legal action in deterring future acts of sabotage against public utilities.
“This conviction reinforces the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance policy on public infrastructure vandalism,” Afolabi stated.
He further emphasised that this decisive action serves as a clear deterrent, affirming the government’s unwavering dedication to securing public assets.
The GM also reaffirmed LSWMO’s commitment to its mandate.
“LSWMO remains steadfast in its commitment to monitoring and maintaining the state’s wastewater treatment facilities to ensure they operate optimally and serve the public effectively,” he said.
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities observed around public utilities to ensure their continued operation.
