A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Aba South, Abia State, has arraigned two men, Chidi Onyendi (47) and Kalu Maduka (76), for alleged conspiracy, theft of a transformer valued at ₦14 million, and issuing threats against community leaders who reported the incident to the police.
The three-count charge, filed by the Commissioner of Police under Charge No: MAS/1/C/2025, alleged that the accused, along with others still at large, conspired on or before May 1, 2025, at Egbelu Iheorji in the Aba South Magisterial District to steal a brand-new 300KVA transformer valued at ₦14 million. The transformer, intended for the community’s power supply project, belonged to the Egbelu Iheorji Community.
Chairman of the Landlord and Tenant Association, Uzoma Cheta, and an executive member, Uche Emmanuel, were listed as the complainants in the matter.
Vanguard gathered that the stolen transformer has since been recovered and is currently in the custody of the Police Area Command, Aba.
In Count III, the prosecution alleged that the accused issued threats against the complainants, vowing to unleash a vigilante group on them in retaliation for reporting the incident. The threats reportedly caused fear and panic among the complainants.
Presiding Magistrate Erinma Maduagwu granted Onyendi bail in the sum of ₦500,000. The bail conditions include a three-year tax clearance certificate and a surety who must be a homeowner within the jurisdiction of the court.
As of the time of filing this report, Onyendi remains remanded at the Aba Correctional Centre, as he is yet to meet the bail conditions.
The case was adjourned to June 19, 2025, for further hearing.
