Religious leaders in Kebbi State have called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a national day of prayer and fasting for divine intervention to end the escalating armed banditry across Northern Nigeria.
The appeal was made during a special interfaith prayer session held on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi, convened by the state government as part of Governor Nasir Idris’ ongoing initiatives to tackle insecurity through both spiritual and strategic means.
The event, the fifth in a series of statewide prayer sessions, attracted prominent Islamic clerics and Christian leaders, including pastors, reverend fathers, and scholars from all sects and denominations, united in one voice against the menace of insecurity.
Governor Idris, while addressing the congregation, reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to restore lasting peace and stability, stressing that the participation of both Muslims and Christians reflected Nigeria’s enduring unity, despite their religious differences.
“When we come together to pray and act as one people, we strengthen our shared commitment to peace, justice, and security,” Governor Idris said, urging communities across the state to sustain the prayers at local levels.
Those who led the Muslim faithful in prayer included Sheikh Abdulrahaman Isah Jega, Sheikh Abbas Muhammadu Jega, Sheikh Umar Malisa, and Sheikh Abubakar Ribah.
On the Christian side, Rev. Femi Oropin, the vice chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kebbi, led the session alongside Rev. Nuhu Mamman Gudul, Rev. Joshua Ochimana, and Justice (rtd.) Mairiga.
The faith leaders subsequently passed a vote of confidence in Governor Idris for his “unwavering commitment to ending banditry in Kebbi and neighbouring states,” citing his proactive engagements with regional stakeholders.
They recalled that the governor had previously hosted several high-level security meetings — including the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, the Progressive Governors Forum, and the Kebbi Elders Consultative Forum — to coordinate responses to insecurity.
Governor Idris’ administration has also bolstered security agencies with 100 Hilux patrol vehicles and 5,000 motorcycles to strengthen surveillance and rapid response operations across vulnerable communities.
In their joint resolution, the religious leaders urged President Tinubu to mobilise a nationwide interfaith prayer, saying divine intervention remains critical alongside military and policy strategies.
“Security is beyond government alone. It requires the hand of God and the unity of all Nigerians,” the clerics declared.
