An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, was on Thursday, fatally stabbed by a middle-aged man suspected to be mentally unstable in Ondo State.

The tragic incident occurred in Oke-Ala community in Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Council Area of the state when two personnel of NSCDC was deployed over a complaint on public disturbance by the suspect.

According to sources in the area, the mother of the suspect had raised the alarm over the disturbing activities of his son, who had been unstable for years and was causing unrest in the area.

One of the sources stated that the situation escalated while the officers attempted to prevent the suspect from further disturbance but he allegedly overpowered one of the officers and stabbed him repeatedly.

“The boy has been acting weirdly of late and suddenly became violent, disturbing the entire area. It was when he was struggling with the officer that he took his knife and stabbed him several times,” the source stated.

“It was shocking because the officer was even armed with a gun and his colleague, yet they could not prevent the brutal attack.

The injured NSCDC personnel was rushed to the hospital but later died from the injuries sustained during the violent encounter.

Confirming the incident, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in the state, Daniel Aidamenbor, said the officers were in the process of restraining the suspect with the intention of taking him to a psychiatric hospital for proper treatment when the incident occurred.

He explained that the tragic attack happened in the course of trying to ensure the safety of both the suspect and the community.

“It is true. The incident happened. It occurred when our officers were attempting to take the man to a facility where he would be treated.”
