Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Traced to Ivory Coast
Contrary to reports which trended online yesterday (Monday, July 29, 2019), elder statesman and former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is neither under arrest nor in danger of arrest.
Newswire checks showed that Baba – as he is fondly called – has not been visible in the country lately because of foreign engagements (he is currently in Abidjan, Ivory Coast), from where he would travel to Conakry, Guinea and pass through Accra, Ghana, on his way back home to Nigeria.
One of his confidants said last night: “Just spoke to Baba. He is in Abidjan. Leaving for Conakry then Accra to return on Wednesday.”
Checks at the Department of State Service (DSS) also confirmed that the former Nigerian leader is very much safe.
“We don’t have any such order to arrest him,” a DSS official said. “What offence has he committed?”
Told of demands in certain quarters for Obasanjo to be arrested in connection with his recent critical letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the worsening insecurity in the country, the DSS official asked: “When has it become a crime to write a letter and make it public?”
