    SPIDEL Newsletter Call for Contributors

    The Editorial Board of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has been set up to publish a quarterly newsletter for sharing the Section news and announcements, well-researched papers mainly centred on Public Interest and Development Law. The newsletter will also feature original content aimed at other diverse perspectives of law. We welcome contributions to our newsletter!
    Articles are to be sent in within 14 days.
    Below are the columns for which we are currently soliciting contributions, as well as more information on how to propose new columns and feature articles.
    A. FEATURE ARTICLES
    Feature articles explore in depth discussions on public interest-related or law development related topics. Articles can take the form of new/original material; book excerpts; visual essays; articles from regional publications seeking a wider audience; articles from print-only publications that would like the article to be published digitally; modified thesis or thesis excerpts; Comic relieving Legal and National write-ups, etc.
    Keep in mind that this is a public interest Section, so articles should have a significant connection to how public interest litigation can advance legal development and the interest of the masses. We welcome creative approaches, including approaches that incorporate multimedia.
    B. COLUMNS
    Columns could be case studies (1,000 to 1,500 words) supplemented with real-world experience, analysis or research. Compelling first-person or personal stories and opinion pieces also are welcome.
    The following columns are currently active and are seeking contributors.
    Judgments and Books Review: Read & Review books, cases and judgments related to public interest and development law.
    A Sense of History. Excerpts and quotes from dictums of judges on using law as a tool for emancipation and development.
    Character of the Quarter. Character of the quarter is a quarterly biography of a member of the profession or society carrying out work relevant to objectives of the Section.
    State of our courts/Profession. This Section will report on court proceedings and on matters arising from the administration of justice.

    Acts of Heroism. Acts of Heroism delves into the history and culture of Nigerians who have acted in the public interest.
    New Column Proposals: As we grow our newsletter, we expect to add additional columns in the future. If you have a subject or approach on which you’d like to write regularly and for which you’d like to propose a column, contact us @ nbaspideleditorialcommittee@gmail.com.
    C. NEWS ITEMS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
    Short, topical, news oriented items and sub-committee updates
    All contributors are welcome, and our editors will work with you to help you get your
    article prepared for publication.


    PUBLICATION PROCESS
    When you contact us to say you’re interested in writing for us, we will help you hone your idea and communicate any expectations for the column for which you’re writing.
    We also feature advertisers.
    Please take note that this call is for the maiden edition of the NBA- SPIDEL’s Newsletter and so all contributors to the said Newsletter will not be forgotten in the history of NBA- SPIDEL.


    GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTANCE OF PROPOSED ARTICLES

    1. Style:
      Proposed Articles must be in the form of a Full length or Short articles, case comments or statute reviews. The Article, whether full or short, case comment or review must not exceed Two Thousand (2,000) words. Footnotes exclusive of the said Two Thousand words. Feature articles can occur in a series across multiple newsletter editions.
      Articles must be Original and may be based on news, trends, or research. They may be written in first person or third person (though not in the same article, please) and depending on the topic, may even be humorous.
      Where copied from a particular source, the source or name of the original publisher must be clearly stated. Note that the Editorial Board shall screen out any Article which conceals the original source.
      All articles must have:
    • A Title page (cover page) which shall contain the title of the Proposed
      Article, Name of the Author with a short bio, Email and Phone number.
    • A brief description summarizing the article content along with a short outline of the structure of the piece and thereafter the main body of the said Article.
    • 1-4 samples of images that would be included in the article. The author is responsible for securing any image/copyright permissions.
    • Factual articles must be inviting and readable, with all statements backed by responsible research and interviews.
    • All articles which are selected for publication will be proof read for content, spelling/grammatical errors and may be copyedited for clarity and style.
    1. Word Count
      Proposed Articles must be in the form of a Full length or Short article, case comments or statute reviews. The Article, whether full or short, case comment or review must not exceed Two Thousand (2,000) words. Footnotes exclusive of the said Two Thousand words.
      • News items and announcements – 50 to 200 words
      • Feature/Major articles – 500 to 2000 words
      • Subcommittee updates – 500 words or less
      Articles should include section headings.
    2. Font: Articles must be submitted in typed Word format Arial Font 12 using double line spacing on A4 Paper.
    3. Video and Audio Options
      Videos, presentations, and audio webinars are also sought for the newsletters.
    4. References in the Proposed Article must be done using endnotes which must be serially numbered.
    5. The Proposed Article must not infringe on Copyright Laws, it must not be defamatory, obscene or otherwise unlawful.
    6. Deadline: All contributions must be addressed to the Editor in Chief of the Editorial Board of NBA-SPIDEL and sent vide Email to nbaspideleditorialcommittee@gmail.com within 14 days of the publication of this Call for Contributors/Articles.
    7. The License: By submitting a contribution to the newsletter, you agree that the text which appears in the newsletter will be publicly available.
    8. The Fine Print: Due to editorial considerations, we may not be able to publish every submitted story in the SPIDEL Newsletter. On occasion we may also need to publish a story in a latter newsletter instead of the current one. We will always endeavour to keep authors informed of these decisions.
      10.We may also need to make minor editorial changes or correct spelling mistakes.
      To establish the identity of the authors, your name will be published with your article.
