In an interview with Dennis Naku, Osatawaji Otuene, the brother of Justina Otuene, a 300-level undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, shares details about her alleged murder by Damian Okoligwe, a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student of the university.
Q: Can you confirm your relationship with the deceased?
A: My name is Osat-Awaji Otuene, and I am the elder brother of Justina Otuene.
Q: How old was she and what was she studying at the university?
A: She was 21 years old and studying Biochemistry at the University of Port Harcourt.
Q: How did you learn about her death?
A: Justina went to work at Prestige Hospital on Friday morning and didn’t return. We became worried when her phone was unreachable. On Sunday, her friend informed us that Justina didn’t attend her birthday party. That’s when we started announcing that she was missing.
Q: Did you check the hospital where she worked?
A: Yes, we visited the hospital on Sunday, and they confirmed that she was at work on Friday. That’s when we officially declared her missing.
Q: Did you know that your late sister was the girlfriend of the suspect?
A: They dated in 2021, but they broke up a long time ago. The claim that she was his girlfriend is wrong.
Q: Did your sister live in the school hostel or off-campus?
A: She lived off-campus behind Chem in Alakahia.
Q: What do you think was the motive behind her killing?
A: I don’t know the motive, but he didn’t have good intentions from the onset.
Q: Have you seen your sister’s corpse?
A: No, my uncles went to the morgue, but I’m not sure if they saw it.
Q: When it was confirmed that your sister was dead, what was your reaction?
A: I felt very bad, it was the worst feeling in my life.
Q: How did you break the news to your mum?
A: We tried to break it to her gently, and with the help of God, she is coping well. I want justice for my sister and urge the government not to let the suspect go free.
Q: Are you satisfied with the investigation conducted by the police?
A: The police are doing a good job, but I urge them to continue the investigation to catch everyone involved in the crime.
In conclusion, I appeal for justice for my sister and request that the wrong narrative surrounding the case comes to an end.
