Ahmad Gumi, an influential Islamic cleric, has requested that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) pay the abductors of Greenfield University students in Kaduna state the amount of N100 million.
As gunmen stormed the school on April 18, some students were abducted.
The kidnappers have since killed five of the students and vowed to kill the remaining 17 if a ransom of N100 million and ten bikes is not paid.
Gumi, who appeared on Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday, said that no sum of money is too large to pay as a ransom to free the students.
“The amount they are demanding is excessive; if I send you the money, you will not be able to flee with it.
Nobody will escape.
So why not give them the money, they release the boys, and then we pursue them, get our money back, and do what is necessary; it’s basic logic,” he explained.
“All right, get the money from the central bank.
How are they going to get the money?
We must not be idiots.
“These people are being infiltrated; Boko Haram is closing in on them, and they do not support the clergy.”
“I require assistance in immunizing them against the infiltration of these philosophies, whether Boko Haram or Ansaru, or whatever it is.
“We need to shield them because they are naive. If there is too much pressure on them, and they see help from Boko Haram, who are richer and have more weapons, it is going to consume everybody.”
