The Chief Medical Director of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State, Prof Ahmed Ahijo, has raised the alarm over the possibility of disease outbreaks due to the flood in the state.
The flood, which began on Tuesday, displaced thousands of residents as it swept through the Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin areas of Maiduguri.
The CMD, in an interview with Aljazeera seen by our correspondent on Friday, disclosed that several expensive cancer machines in the hospital with a 1,305-bed capacity were submerged in the flood.
Ahijo added that the hospital has been forced to suspend admitting patients to the hospital wards due to fear of contamination and infections due to sewage mixed with the flood.
He said, “The whole of the ground floor of the hospital and the centres – we have 14 specialised centres in the hospital – are all flooded, and some of the machines there are very expensive.
“We know in the medical field that cancer machines are extremely expensive. Radiology departments, laboratories, and kidney centre machines are very expensive and all these machines are submerged in the water.”
Highlighting other challenges faced by the hospital, Ahijo further stated that emergency care for patients has been made difficult due to the flooding of the oxygen plant of the hospital.
