Even as we strive to keep pace with the rollercoaster of events in the Nigerian legal community, we are always ahead of the curve in our reportage of said events, as well as our exploration of topical issues and our showcasing of evolving trends in the noble profession.
That much is evident in our latest edition of Nigeria’s foremost law events publication. We have once again surpassed ourselves with our signature narrative style and striking visuals – as we capture what went down in the community in the first two quarters of 2025.
Our Cover Story closes the final chapter in a long-running saga: the 5-year ban imposed on Chief COC Akaolisa (the immediate past Attorney-General of Imo State) by the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), the appeals against the ban since 2021, and its recent quashing by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. For COC and other crusaders for the rule of law in Nigeria, the apex Court’s verdict is a bittersweet vindication.
This edition also showcases the philanthropy of the legal titan, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN – with special emphasis on his enormous investments in the area of higher education.
In our countdown to the 2025 NBA Lagos Branch election, we sat down with the trio of candidates vying for the Chairmanship of the Branch, as they laid out – with considerable conviction and eloquence – their respective credentials, priorities and vision for the Branch.
No sooner than it became a full-fledged Branch of the NBA did the formerly-named Surulere Lawyers’ Forum (SLF) hit the proverbial ground running – notably with the holding of its maiden Law Week earlier in the year. Check out our overview of proceedings at this well-attended 2-day event.
The Forum of In-house and Government Counsel (FIGC) of the NBA Lagos Branch has, since its founding, been unambiguous in its desire to exit the margins and inhabit the mainstream of the scheme of things in the Premier Branch. Under the dynamic leadership of its founding Chairperson, Justina Lewa, the Forum has embarked on a series of impactful programmes and activities designed to enhance its impact on the career trajectories of its members and its visibility in the legal community. This issue showcases one of such activities – a Mentorship and Networking Session. It was a time of intense knowledge-sharing and career-boosting interactions for its members.
Of course, no edition of NEWSWIRE Law Magazine would be complete without the usual complement of titbits and insightful opinion columns – and this edition is no exception.
Take time also to savour the humour in our ‘Law is Funny, Too, ‘ section. NEWSWIRE, after all, is about style as well as substance.
We believe you will enjoy going through this issue. We certainly enjoyed putting it together.
Happy reading, and thanks for your patronage.
