Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, co-founders of one of the world’s largest private charitable foundations, have officially divorced after a judge approved their split.
The pair had filed for divorce on May 3 — after 27 years of marriage — but a filing with the King County Superior Court in Washington confirmed the split on Monday.
But according to Reuters, there were no details of that agreement in the final divorce order filed before the court. It added that the court did not issue money, property, or spousal support judgments in the divorce
Bill and Melinda had while announcing their divorce reached an agreement on how to divide their marital assets.
The court records also showed that neither party will change their name or receive “spousal support,” as reported by Bloomberg.
The duo has been at the forefront of major philanthropic activities worldwide through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Although they have pledged to continue working together on the foundation, a note was shared to their employees, which stated that if any of them decide they cannot work together, Melinda will resign as co-chair.
“They have repeatedly made clear their joint commitment and expectation to remain long-term partners and co-chairs,” the note by Mark Suzman, the foundation CEO, read.
“However, as an additional step, they have agreed that if after two years either one of them decides that they cannot continue to work together, Melinda will resign as co-chair and trustee.”
Bill and Melinda met in 1987 and were married in 1994. Their foundation was launched in 2000.
