The Benue State Police Command has smashed a major criminal hideout in Makurdi and separately rescued six children from suspected traffickers along the Orokam-Enugu Road, after two coordinated operations in the state.
This is contained in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, on Friday, in Makurdi, the state capital.
Edet said officers acted on a distress call at about 6:30pm Thursday and tracked a stolen Bajaj motorcycle to a compound along George Akume Way in Makurdi.
The statement further revealed that police patrol teams arrived to find a large crowd gathered at the scene.
It added that upon gaining access to the compound, officers discovered 11 suspected stolen motorcycles, 47 motorcycle seats, fuel tanks, three mattresses, criminal charms, a single-barrel firearm, and other incriminating items.
However, the situation took a tragic turn when two suspects fled the scene but were intercepted and lynched by members of the public near the BIPC office before the police could intervene.
The police spokesperson noted that the suspects were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Wadata, where they were confirmed dead by a doctor and later deposited in the mortuary.
“The State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, has taken over the matter,” she said.
