The President of the Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, has shut the border route between Taberu, a village in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State in Nigeria and Tanu, a neighbouring village in the Benin Republic.

According to reports by Saturday PUNCH in the area revealed that President Talon banned the trade route between the two countries to prevent the movement of some agricultural produce which included Cashew nuts and Soya beans.

It was gathered that the Beninous President, after closing the illegal route between the two countries, also increased the commodity duty which he imposed on the traders.

Reliable sources, including immigration officers and traditional rulers in the area confirmed the border closure.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Usman Umoru-Seriki, said President Talon banned the transportation of cashew nuts and soya beans through an illegal route from his country to Nigeria.

“He only allowed the transportation of cashew nuts and soya beans through a legal route and imposed a higher tariff on the two produces.”

“Traders that want to bring soya beans and cashew nuts are made to pay higher duties and he only allows them to take the legal route. This is not the first time that he is closing the border, he closed the border against Togo last year”, the Emir said.

A Nigerian immigration officer, who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the closure.
