The remains of a cameraman with Channels Television, Kani Ben, who died following injuries sustained in a motor accident in Bauchi State, were laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Kangling, Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Kani Ben lost his life after a tragic crash that occurred along Duguri Road while he was among journalists covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission.
The late journalist, born on May 28, 1982, passed away on February 15, 2026, after battling injuries from the accident, which involved 14 persons, including journalists from various media organisations. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Speaking during the burial ceremony, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, expressed deep sympathy over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased as well as the journalism community.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Information, Usman Shehu, the governor announced the automatic employment of Ben’s wife, Sarah, into the Bauchi State Civil Service as part of efforts to support the bereaved family.
Shehu recalled that the governor had earlier visited the injured journalists receiving treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he directed his personal physician to remain with them.
“The governor shares in the grief of the family and recognises the sacrifice made by journalists in the line of duty,” the commissioner said.
In a tribute, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, described Ben as “a dedicated professional, a humble colleague, and a kind soul.”
“He was a man of simplicity, dignity, and professionalism who earned the respect of everyone through his hard work and commitment to his craft,” Gidado said.
“He understood that his duty was not just to record events, but to document history, rain or shine, early morning or late night.”
Also speaking, the Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Abuja Diocese, Reverend Cletus Dading, expressed appreciation to the Bauchi State Government for its support to the family.
He offered prayers for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for divine comfort for the family.
On its part, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has mourned the passing of Kani Ben.
The representative of the commission’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, Naomi Abwaku, described his death in active service as a painful loss and a testament to his dedication to duty and to the important role of the media in society.
“On behalf of the Governing Board, Management, and Staff of the Commission, I extend our sincere condolences to his family, Channels Television, the Bauchi State Government, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the entire media community,” Alkali said.
