The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and unfounded reports of a protest in Enugu State following the alleged discovery of a live explosive device on farmland, describing the claims as a deliberate attempt to incite fear and panic in communities across the South East.

In a statement released by Lt. Col. Eromosele Unuakhalu, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army clarified that no protest took place in Enugu and labeled the reports circulating on some mainstream and online media platforms as “unsubstantiated, misleading, and lacking credible verification.”

Unuakhalu stated:

“Preliminary findings indicate that no such protest occurred. The narrative appears to be designed to incite unwarranted fear and tension within Ochima and adjoining communities in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.”

He assured the public that the Nigerian Army has robust standard operating procedures for the handling, deployment, and disposal of explosive ordnance, always conducted in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure safety and transparency.

“We assure the good people of Enugu State, and indeed all South Easterners, that our findings revealed no immediate threat or cause for alarm in relation to the alleged incident,” the statement added.

The Army called on citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, while also urging the media to uphold responsible journalism by verifying facts with the appropriate authorities before publication.

“The spread of inaccurate reports not only misinforms the public but also undermines collective efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.”

The statement concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the 82 Division to work closely with civil authorities in sustaining peace and security across Enugu State and the entire South East region.
