APC berates Obi over ‘Yahoo boys’ remark

The All Progressives Congress has berated the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over his recent attack on the presidency, saying he is playing the role of an irresponsible opposition.

Obi last week claimed there were more ‘Yahoo boys’ in President Bola Tinubu’s government, who were turning Nigeria into a crime scene than young Nigerians being arrested for the same financial malpractice.

The former Anambra State governor disclosed this in the keynote address he delivered as guest speaker at the fourth graduation ceremony of Nexford University.

Obi further stressed that Nigeria was at the mercy of corrupt officials feeding from the government.

Reacting in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the National Publicity Director of the APC, Bala Ibrahim, said he, like many reasonable Nigerians, was disappointed in Obi’s wild and unsubstantiated allegation.

Ibrahim also expressed concerns that the LP chieftain’s conduct doesn’t depict a leader who was serious about ruling the country.

He said, “You cannot just make wild allegations or accusations without substantiation. If you say there is yahoo yahoo in government, let him point to what the government has done that is yahoo-related to warrant that accusation. You cannot just wake up from your dream and make wild accusations that make you look ridiculous and irresponsible.

“I think Obi and LP simply don’t understand the meaning of opposition. Opposition is supposed to be checkmating the activities programmes and policies of the government. They are supposed to criticise constructively where they feel the government is derailing.

“But when the opposition becomes reckless and clueless in their accusations, they are beginning to lose sight of why they are in the opposition. The reason you find yourself in the opposition is because you either failed to prepare or you did not prepare to win.”
