“Allow Gov. Fubara to Breathe,” Sagay Urges Wike, Cautions Against Distractions in Rivers State Politics

Renowned constitutional lawyer and anti-corruption advocate, Prof. Itse Sagay, has called on Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to allow peace to reign in the state and refrain from actions that could further destabilize the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Sagay’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and allegations surrounding the governor’s position.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Prof. Sagay urged Governor Wike to allow his successor, Fubara, the space to govern effectively without unnecessary distractions. “Governor Fubara must be given the freedom to breathe and carry out his responsibilities as the duly elected governor of Rivers State. You can’t be a minister and a governor at the same time,” Sagay stated, referring to the ongoing political maneuverings that have brought about speculation on the stability of Fubara’s administration.

The comment by Sagay is seen as a call for political unity and a more constructive approach to governance, following growing tensions in the state’s leadership. The ongoing political discourse has led to questions surrounding the political future of Fubara, particularly with rumors of possible impeachment efforts against him.

In response to a query about the absence of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, Prof. Sagay downplayed the significance of the situation in relation to any impeachment proceedings. “I don’t think that can happen,” he said, dismissing concerns that the absence of the Chief Judge would pose any immediate obstacle to the rumored impeachment plans.

Sagay further emphasized the importance of stability in Rivers State, urging political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people over personal or political ambitions. “Rivers State has been through a lot, and the people deserve peace, not distractions or conflict,” he said.

Governor Wike, who is currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has faced increasing pressure from critics who argue that his dual roles are incompatible and may be detrimental to the governance of Rivers State.
