The Kano State chapter of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, on Thursday, resolved to resume full services at the state owned hospital, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital following the mediation of the State Governor, Abba Yusuf in the rift between the association and a serving Commissioner over alleged assault of a medical doctor.

The NMA Chairman, Dr. Abdurrahman Ali while speaking with Vanguard, said the association resolved to resume full services to allow the Governor take necessary action on the incident.

Recall the association had directed it members at the state owned hospital to withdraw their services at the expiration of the 48-hours ultimatum to the state government to sack the commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Aisha Abdullahi or they down tool.

Dr. Ali said, “upon meeting with the Governor, he said he has collected the report from the committee set up on the incident and will act accordingly. He said justice will be served.

“So after an e-conference, we resolved with the members to resume full service (we had earlier withdraw our members) to allow the negotiation to continue,” Dr. Ali said.

Earlier, the State Governor, Abba Yusuf has appealed to Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to shelve their industrial action and avoid putting lives of over 20 million residents at risk in Kano.

The Governor stressed that NMA could have allowed the investigative panel set up under his directive to examine the development and take decisive action, rather than shut down services and abandon innocent residents seeking medical assistance.

“I know how many industrial action planned by NMA that were subsequently shelved because of the mutual relationship between the doctors and Kano state government. The NMA knows how important the government value the welfare of doctors.

“When the issue was reported to me, I immediately set up committee to investigate and report back to me in 48 house. As I sit here, the report is already on my table and I am going to act on this immediately.

And, if they now felt nobody can talk to them and they cannot wait for the report and the next action is strike. They can’t afford to put the lives of 20 million innocent residents at risk because of fight between two females,” Yusuf cautioned.

The Governor who eventually tendered apology on behalf of the government over the incident urged the association to call off their industrial action in the interest of pregnant women waiting for delivery and others at the hospital.

He insisted any government official found guilty of wrong doing would not be spared.
