The management of Federal Polytechnic Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area says it has secured accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education for 21 academic programmes of the institution.

The polytechnic also disclosed that it has obtained approval from NBTE and the Federal Ministry of Education under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training programme to operate as a skills training centre in fashion design, leatherwork, paint making, printing and decoration, among other trades.

The Rector of the institution, Mrs. Eduma Essien, announced the achievements on Saturday while presenting an account of her stewardship covering the last 12 months.

According to her, the accreditation covers 19 National Diploma programmes and three Higher National Diploma programmes.

She said, “One of the signficant milestones recorded in this first year is in the area of accreditation of academic programmes. We successfully secured accreditation for 21 academic programmes. This covers ND and HND programmes’

She added, “‘Moreso, the NBTE and the Federal Ministry of Education under the TVET programme has approved the institution to operate as a skill Training centre in Fashion Design, Leather work, paint making, printing and decoration and others,’” noting that the outcomes reflect “effective academic planning, compliance with regulatory standards and strong inter-departmental collaboration”.

The rector said the institution is taking deliberate steps to address infrastructural gaps, adding that several projects sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund are at various stages of completion.

She said the polytechnic has commenced production activities including tissue paper manufacturing, furniture making, paint production and block moulding as part of efforts to strengthen the institution’s revenue base and promote practical training.

In the area of international collaboration, Mrs. Essien said the institution recorded additional achievements as 27 staff members received TETFund scholarships to attend an international conference in Kigali.

She said the development enhanced “international visibility of the Polytechnic, research network and collaboration as well as adoption of global best practices in teaching, learning and academic planning”.
