The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the February 21 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, Dr. Moses Paul, has announced a scholarship pledge for the children of a party agent who died during the conduct of the poll, describing the gesture as a commitment to honour courage and sacrifice in the defence of democracy.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Dr. Paul rejected the outcome of the election, alleging that the process was compromised by widespread irregularities. However, the most emotional moment of his press briefing centred on the death of ADC agent Musa Abubakar at the Gwagwa polling unit.
According to Dr. Paul, Abubakar lost his life while attempting to safeguard votes at his polling station. He described him as a dedicated supporter who believed strongly in civic participation and accountable leadership.
“I have since visited his family to commiserate with them,” Dr. Paul said. “As a modest commitment to honour his courage and sacrifice, I have ensured that his children will be placed on scholarship.”
The ADC candidate noted that while no gesture can replace the loss of a loved one, supporting the education of Abubakar’s children is a way of standing by the family during what he described as a painful and difficult time. He called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that justice is served.
Beyond the tragic development, Dr. Paul maintained that the election did not reflect what he termed the genuine will of AMAC residents. He said he had carefully reviewed the declared results but remained convinced, based on extensive grassroots engagement and reports from his campaign structure, that his movement earned the people’s mandate.
While acknowledging the official announcement, he strongly condemned the outcome, arguing that it did not align with the mood of voters across the council area.
Dr. Paul cited several alleged irregularities during the election. These, he said, included movement restrictions linked to the imposition of a curfew, intimidation and alleged attacks on ADC members, widespread vote buying across multiple wards, and voter suppression resulting from the late arrival of election materials in key polling units, including Kabusa.
He further alleged that there were cases of alteration and mutilation of polling unit results, developments he described as deeply troubling for the integrity of the democratic process.
“These actions undermine the credibility of the electoral system and erode the confidence of the people in our democracy,” he said.
Despite his objections to the outcome, Dr. Paul emphasised that his political engagement is rooted in principles rather than positions.
He thanked supporters across communities such as Karshi, Wuse, Nyanya, and Gui for their participation and resilience throughout the campaign and election period.
He also expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the African Democratic Congress for their steadfast commitment to a values-driven campaign.
Reaffirming his dedication to the people of AMAC, Dr. Paul said the quest for accountable and transparent leadership would continue through lawful and democratic means. He urged residents to remain peaceful while demanding credible processes and justice.
“This journey does not end with an announcement,” he said. “It continues in our collective resolve to protect the integrity of our democracy and to stand by those who paid the ultimate price for it.”
Dr. Paul concluded by reiterating his commitment to transparency, justice, and responsive governance, stating that the sacrifice of party supporters, particularly Musa Abubakar, would not be forgotten.
