The Adamawa State Judiciary, in collaboration with the Public and Private Development Centre, has discharged 57 inmates and granted bail to 29 others as part of an ongoing decongestion exercise across correctional centres in the state.
The Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, announced the figures on Friday during the conclusion of the jail delivery exercise at the Jimeta Custodial Centre in Yola.
According to her, the committee also reviewed the sentences of three inmates and assessed the cases of 52 non-convicted inmates.
She noted that the PPDC paid fines for four inmates who had been convicted with an option of fine, leading to their discharge.
Justice Abdulrahman advised the released inmates to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid returning to criminal activities. She explained that many of them had committed minor offences and were not considered to require prolonged detention.
In her remarks, Ms. Motunrayo Anibaba, State Programme Manager for PPDC, said the organisation allocated N1 million to support the payment of fines for convicted detainees.
She stated that reducing overcrowding in custodial centres is one of the organisation’s key objectives, adding that the intervention forms part of the Reforming Pretrial Detention in Nigeria Project (Phase II), aimed at strengthening justice delivery and safeguarding the rights and dignity of detainees.
Anibaba acknowledged the cooperation between the PPDC, correctional authorities, and the justice sector.
Speaking on behalf of the released inmates, Haggai Audu expressed appreciation for the gesture and pledged that the beneficiaries would strive to be of good character.
