The management of Abia State University, Uturu, on Saturday said it had noted with dismay what it described as a sponsored protest by some Engineering students over the disqualification of a presidential aspirant in the forthcoming Students’ Union Government election.
It was alleged that the SUG election was inconclusive because the Engineering Faculty candidate for the SUG presidency was disqualified on the grounds that he is not from Abia State.
In a press release issued on Saturday and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Chijioke Nwogu, the institution stated that “the said student was disqualified by the Students’ Union Government Electoral Commission on security grounds”.
The statement further said, “However, rather than explore established internal mechanisms for redress, he mobilised some students from his faculty and other neighbouring institutions to disrupt the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university.”
The statement added, “Accordingly, in order to safeguard lives and property and maintain law and order within the campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, directed that the 2025/2026 SUG election is postponed indefinitely. A new date for the election will be announced later and new aspirants into all offices will be free to apply.
“The present SUG Exco is to continue in office till a new exco is elected and the Students’ Electoral Committee is hereby dissolved. A new committee will be constituted.”
Management also directed “an investigation into the alleged security concerns that led to the disqualification of Nicholas Emmanuel Chimaobi, as well as his subsequent actions in relation to the protest within the university”.
While acknowledging the right of students to express grievances through appropriate and lawful channels, the statement said, “Management strongly condemns actions capable of disrupting academic activities and undermining the orderly administration of the institution.
“Students are therefore encouraged to seek dialogue and constructive engagement rather than resorting to protests that cause tensions.
“Management remains resolute in upholding its mandate and ensuring a peaceful, secure, and conducive learning environment, as well as equal opportunity for all, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or social affiliation. All those instigating unrest are hereby warned to desist immediately.
“Students are strongly advised to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their academic pursuits, which remain the primary purpose of their admission into the university.”
The students carried placards, some of which read, “No Nicholas, No Election”, “We See Injustice, We Say No. Restore Nicholas”, and “With One Voice, We Ask For Reason.”
