Crisis has hit the Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress as the State Working Committee on Friday suspended its chairman, Don Obinna, over alleged abuse of office and high-handedness.
According to Saturday PUNCH it was gathered that the decision was taken during an harmonisation and unification meeting of the party held in Aba, following a petition written by the Deputy Social/Welfare Secretary of the party, C. C. John.
The state vice chairman, Kanu Okorofor, was immediately named acting chairman, while a three-man committee headed by Kalu Kalu was set up to investigate the allegations against Obinna.
Speaking after the meeting, Okorofor accused the embattled chairman of mismanaging party affairs, including the sale of two buses, a Sienna car and other property belonging to the ADC.
“Obinna ran the party like a personal business. After the 2023 elections he drove everyone away from the party. He holds meetings without inviting SWC members and dismisses them after speaking,” Okorofor alleged.
He added that the suspension was necessary to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
“Obinna’s suspension came at the right time because we need a chairman who will work for the interest of the party so we can meet our target,” he said.
When contacted, Obinna told The PUNCH he was in a meeting and promised to respond later.
However, he has yet to get back as of the time of filing this report.
