Nigeria’s Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the country.
Going forward, Democracy is as much a process as is a goal, and only with the full participation and support of the national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, will the gains and benefits of democracy become realities to be enjoyed by everyone, irrespective of tribe, region or religion.
The values of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are some of the essential elements of a democracy.
In turn, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. May we get it right both as an association and as a country.
