Dear female colleagues, I read and then watched with shock the altercation between Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu and Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano at Prof Soludo’s inauguration ceremony on Thursday the 17th of March 2022.
To say I was shocked and deeply saddened is an understatement. It was very uncharitable for Mrs. Obiano to leave her seat to walk to where Bianca Ojukwu was seated to pour insults on her. It was also sad to see Mrs. Bianca slap Mrs Obiano.
While it was tasteless and clearly provocative for Mrs. Obiano to verbally attack Mrs. Ojukwu, there was surely a better, graceful way to handle the provocation! None of those ways was explored here!
I therefore urge us all, especially the young female lawyers, never to emulate the path of violence. It never pays. We must be careful to exhibit proper decorum whereever we find ourselves. Grace, decorum and proper behaviour must be our watchword, no matter how hard we are provoked!
As female lawyers, we must also ensure that we do not resort to casting vicious slurs on the character of other women as that does nothing but exarcerbate the bias against all hardworking women.
I therefore raise my voice against the abuse of women by women and urge us all to refrain from indulging in, or tolerating same.
Dear women, we are all champions. We must always lift each other up! Never should we be seen belittling, bullying or defaming ourselves.
Instead, let us lift ourselves up and together, break the bias against us.
With sisterly love,
LINDA ROSE BALA
