Mr Ede Asenoguan has added his voice in condemning the assault of a lawyer by customs officials. In a video making the rounds on social media, it was shown how customs officials manhandled a Lawyer who was apparently doing his job representing his client.
Reacting to the viral video, Mr Ede stated:
“The viral video showing a lawyer being manhandled and assaulted by customs officials once again reinforces the fear that lawyers may have fallen under the class of ‘endangered species’ as we have now become like a ball being tossed from security agency to another who take their turns to exhibit less than acceptable means of resolving issues relating to lawyers in line of duty.
Notwithstanding the explanation offered by Customs, I must state that it is unjustifiable to assault a lawyer in line of duty. We must not resort to the most undesirable of options in dealing with issues.
There have been reports of the Nigerian Police Force, the Military and other security agencies harassing and dehumanizing lawyers. The constant act of harassment from security agencies is an insult to every lawyer and the Nigerian Bar Association at large.
It is on this note that I call on the NBA-SARC, a committee set up by the NBA President to rise up to action and put an end to this menace. Our constitutional right to dignity must be upheld and respected. We are the last hope of the common man, however, keeping quiet and watching this act continue makes mockery of our position and duties in the society.
Proactive measures must be taken to put an end to this disgraceful act. Lawyers must be respected and held in high esteem by all and sundry. We cannot be trampled upon as though we do not matter when in actuality we matter a lot if not the most.”
Signed:
Ede Asenoguan,Esq
