In the run-up to what promises to be an eventful electoral programme in 2022, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has set up an Electoral Committee (ECNBA) under the Chairmanship of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Richard Ayodele Akintunde. This action is part of decisions taken at the recently-concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NBA in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
A leading legal scholar and former Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Anselm Chidi Odinkalu is a prominent member of the Committee. Others include Aisha Ado-Abdulahi and Basil Udotai, while Mabel Okeke will serve as Secretary of the Committee.
The ECNBA is constitutionally mandated to oversee the conduct of elections into various offices in the Executive Council of the Association and is thus expected to put up plans, modalities ad the machinery to that effect. Elections into the NBA National Executive are a biennial affair.
The Electoral Committee is expected to announce the rules and guidelines relating to eligibility and nominations in the coming days.
