Tragedy struck in the popular Nza Street Junction, Independence Layout Enugu when a water tanker rammed into a commercial tricycle loading bay on Thursday evening.The incident left a one-year-old child, his mother and four other persons dead and many others injured.Eyewitnesses said the tricycle driver and five passengers died on the spot.
One of the eye witnesses said:“The tanker was coming from UNICEF end.It obviously lost its break and also lost control because it was descending from the sloppy road.“It came crashing on the keke drivers that were waiting for passengers opposite the Bush Bar.
“The tanker continued moving and hit down a woman and her child, the woman died on the spot and we are suspecting that the little baby she was carrying was dragged along by the tanker because it was fully loaded.“It continued moving and ended up in the compound sharing same fence with the Bush Bar before stopping.
“A lot of persons are pinned down by the vehicle but we have seen four lifeless bodies. He said Mr. President cannot wake up one morning and revoke contract agreements, no matter how faulty, otherwise, the media will accuse him of dictatorship and blame him for scaring off foreign investors.He, however, said that they were happy that the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, an engineer, had an answer to the intractable problem in the electricity value chain.
Quoting the Power minister, Udeh said: “It must be clearly stated that within this value chain, some responsibilities are by virtue of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) performed by our private sector partners and other agencies of the government.“These partners are being monitored and sometimes given the needed nudge in the right direction to achieve our objectives. We shall be taking a careful and detailed look at issues of policy, capacity and the technical requirement, among other things.
“One very critical concern that we must address in this performance monitoring process is to find out if the terms for granting the licenses were onerous.”Udeh added that they were not talking of budgeted and abandoned federal roads, hospitals, universities and the celebrated N23 billion unaccounted three Green Field Refineries that the PDP announced in 2010, which could have saved over N5 trillion for Nigeria, had it been completed.“And this was happening when oil sold an average of 100 dollar per barrel and Nigeria had then over 40 billion dollars Excess Crude Account.”
