Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Jobs, has provided President Muhammadu Buhari with the demands of numerous unions that have gone on strike in order for him to intervene.
After the presentation at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Ngige responded to questions from State House correspondents by saying he briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on the country’s various attacks.
According to him, the president ordered his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, and other appropriate stakeholders to work with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) to address the issues so that the strike could be called off.
“I need to give the President an update on the country’s labor-industrial situation.
You are aware that we are in the midst of a strike season.
“The resident doctors have taken up the strike baton, which is being strongly sponsored by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
And we had some conciliation meetings where we came to some agreements.
“And I had to brief him ahead of time on the efforts we’re making in those areas, such as the agreement to review the danger allowance.
”In reality, my ministry and the Presidential Committee on Salaries had proposed what we may call a pre-emptive arrangement to allow for more negotiation between all stakeholders before they went on strike.
”The Federal Ministry of Health, the Salary, Income and Wages Commission, health unions, the National Medical Association (NMA), which leads the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), the Association of Dental and Medical Consultants, the Association of General Duty Doctors, and others,” he said.
According to him, under the umbrella of the Medical and Health Workers Union, JOHESU will head the Nurses and Midwives Association, pharmacists, lab technologists, and other health workers.
“That meeting is now in full swing.
And we know from our initial meetings and the data we have that a certain amount of money will be spent or used to bring about this transition, which will be permanent.
“And when we began paying it, it swallowed N32 billion.
As a result, we are currently working to ensure that health workers feel valued and that the government recognizes their efforts.
As a result, I’ve also briefed him on that,” he said.
