The Elegant Nurses Forum has congratulated Nigerians and members of the left movement following what it described as a landmark judicial victory secured by human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, at the Federal High Court.

In a statement by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide on behalf of the forum, the group described the ruling as a major moment for justice, democracy, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

On Friday the Federal High Court in Lagos condemned the lawlessness of the Commissioner of Police and held the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accountable for the misconduct, ruling that their actions were unconstitutional, arbitrary, and a grave abuse of power in declaring Sowore wanted.

The court had stated that only a court of law, upon the issuance of a warrant, proper notice, and proof that a citizen is evading lawful process, can authorise such a declaration.

The court awarded N30million in damages against CP Moshood Jimoh and IGP Egbetokun over the controversial declaration issued on November 3, 2025.

Counsel for Sowore, Tope Temokun, disclosed on Friday that the judgment, which lasted one hour and thirty minutes, stands as a significant constitutional rebuke to abuse of state power.

The nurses forum said the court decision “is not just a personal victory for Comrade Sowore, but a significant win for justice, rule of law, and democracy in Nigeria,” stressing that the outcome represents a broader triumph for citizens seeking accountability.

According to the statement, the judgment also demonstrates that the Nigerian judicial system can still deliver justice despite widespread public skepticism.

“It stands as a strong reminder that, despite challenges, justice can still be achieved within the Nigerian judicial system,” the group said.

The nurses’ forum noted that the ruling came at a period when many Nigerians had begun to doubt the credibility of the courts, adding that the decision has played a critical role in rebuilding public confidence.

“At a time when many citizens have begun to lose faith in the judiciary, this judgment has helped to restore hope and confidence,” the statement read.

The group further stated that the outcome reassures citizens that sustained advocacy and courage remain powerful tools in the pursuit of justice, saying the ruling “has reassured the masses that persistence, courage, and commitment to truth can yield positive results.”

The forum also used the statement to criticise what it described as abuse of authority by some law enforcement officials, arguing that the judgment has now placed limits on such actions.

“We also note that this ruling has exposed and challenged the excesses of power by certain authorities,” the statement said, adding that “the actions of the illegal IGP and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, driven by abuse of power and disregard for due process, have now been rightfully checked by the law.”

According to the group, the decision sends a clear message to public office holders across the country, noting that it “serves as a clear warning that no individual or office is above the law.”

The Elegant Nurses Forum commended Sowore for what it described as steadfast dedication throughout the legal struggle, praising his “resilience and unwavering commitment to justice and human rights.

The statement also acknowledged the role played by activists and ordinary Nigerians who supported the campaign, stating that the forum “equally salute all Nigerians and activists who stood firm in solidarity throughout this struggle.”

Encouraging citizens not to become discouraged by challenges facing the country, the group urged continued civic engagement and public demand for accountability.

“We encourage citizens not to lose hope but to continue to demand accountability, fairness, and justice at all levels,” the statement added, stressing that “a just society is possible when the people remain vigilant and united.”

The forum concluded by reiterating its belief that collective action and sustained pressure from citizens remain essential to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring justice for all Nigerians.
