A UK-based Nigerian student, Khaleed Oladipo, has been named by police as the 20-year-old who was fatally stabbed near De Montfort University in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police said Oladipo died in hospital on Tuesday evening after being stabbed in Oxford Street.

An 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody as investigations continue.

A post-mortem examination showed he died from a stab wound to the chest. Officers were called just after 17:00 GMT on Tuesday to reports that a man had collapsed in Oxford Street near the junction with Bonners Lane, prompting the closure of several surrounding roads.

Oladipo, who was from London, was in his second year at De Montfort University studying cyber-security. His family described him as “a good boy who loved his family”, adding: “We cannot begin to put into words how sad we are to have lost Khaleed,” as quoted by the BBC.

They said he was a passionate football fan and an Arsenal supporter, and believed he was on his way home to watch a match when he was attacked. “We believe he was on his way home to watch the game later that night when he was stabbed and killed,” the family said.

The family also thanked members of the public who tried to help Oladipo, as well as ambulance and hospital staff “who did all they could to try and save him”.

They added: “We are also really grateful to the police for their efforts in the investigation so far to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice. We are struggling to understand why anyone would do this.”

De Montfort University vice-chancellor Prof Katie Normington said she was “devastated” by Oladipo’s death and confirmed that direct support was being offered to students, staff and his family. “Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened,” she said.
