Anambra assembly extends lawmaker’s suspension for three months

The Anambra State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of the lawmaker representing Ayamelum Constituency, Bernard Udemezue, for another three months without pay for non-compliance with House rules and engaging in unparliamentary activities.

The extension followed the recommendations of the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges during plenary on Thursday.

The Majority Leader, Ikenna Ofodeme, who chairs the committee, said Udemezue continued posting materials that ridiculed the Assembly on his Facebook account and failed to comply with the resolutions of August 28, 2025.

Ofodeme said, “Udemezue violated the resolution by showing up in the legislative chamber on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, and not only did he show up, but also appeared ready to disrupt the legislative activities of the day.”

The committee also recommended that the lawmaker should apologise to the Speaker and members of the Eighth Assembly in writing and on his social media platforms within five days starting from November 26, 2025.

It added that findings during the suspension period showed that Udemezue had not apologised to the Speaker or the Assembly members, either through social media or in writing.

It further stated that the suspended lawmaker should not be seen around the Assembly premises during the suspension period

It had  been reported on Tuesday that Udemezue was walked out of the legislative chamber shortly before the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, appeared for the presentation of the 2026 budget.

Udemezue, who was already seated in the chamber, was approached by the Deputy Speaker, Chukwuma Okoye, and the member representing Oyi Constituency, Innocent Ojike, who accompanied him out of the chamber with security operatives.

According to the Assembly, the lawmaker did not follow due process after his earlier three-month suspension had elapsed.

In his defence, Udemezue said he followed due process and had submitted the necessary letters for resumption to the appropriate authorities before appearing at the chamber.

Security operatives, however, insisted and escorted him to the new legislative building.

PUNCH Online had reported in August 2025 that the Assembly suspended Udemezue for three months over a message and content he shared on social media, which the House described as “damaging content”.

The lawmaker, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, had shared posts alleging that his constituency, Ayamelum, was being marginalised in the area of constituency allowance.
