The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) has ordered the immediate closure of all basic schools across the state as a precautionary measure to safeguard pupils and reassure communities of the government’s commitment to their safety.
In a statement issued by the Board and released by its Public Relations Officer, Richard Jonah, PSUBEB directed that all Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) suspend academic activities from Saturday, 22 November 2025, while primary and day schools will close from Monday, 24 November 2025.
The Board explained that the temporary shutdown is a proactive step to prevent potential threats to learners’ wellbeing. Although no specific security incident was cited, the decision was based on intelligence assessments and the need to act swiftly to avert possible risks.
“The wellbeing of our learners remains our top priority,” the statement read. “This closure is temporary but necessary to ensure that every child under the basic education system is protected. We urge parents, guardians, and communities to remain calm as government works closely with relevant agencies to strengthen safety measures.”
PSUBEB also appealed to Local Government Education Authorities, school heads, and community leaders to comply fully with the directive and remain vigilant until normal academic activities resume. Updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
The directive has received mixed reactions from parents and teachers, with many expressing appreciation for the timely intervention while hoping for a swift resolution that would allow children to return to school.
