Residents of Anambra State on Monday intensified the weekly sit-at-home to protest the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
Although IPOB had long cancelled the Monday sit-at-home it introduced in 2021 across the South-East region to protest Kanu’s rendition from Kenya and his subsequent incarceration, the exercise was still widely observed in many parts of the state.
The sit-at-home, which was intense between 2021 and 2024, had begun to subside in 2025 as social and commercial activities gradually picked up.
However, on Monday, it was gathered that due to the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, residents across the state decided to remain indoors — some out of fear of possible attacks, and others in solidarity with the protest.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the people of Anambra for their growing commitment to peace, unity, and progress. He assured that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to sustain the existing peace and ensure that law-abiding citizens continued their legitimate activities without fear.
Orutugu reiterated that the Command under his watch would continue to adopt proactive measures, strengthen community policing strategies, and collaborate with critical stakeholders to maintain security, law, and order across the state.
Although IPOB had announced the cancellation of the exercise, residents said they continued to observe it out of fear of attacks by hoodlums who might attempt to enforce it.
