63-Year-Old Man Arrested for Motorcycle Theft in Niger

A 63-year-old man, Mohammed Sani, has been arrested while attempting to steal a motorcycle, popularly known as Bajaj, in Niger State.

The incident occurred last Sunday at Tungan-Kawo village in Kontagora Local Government Area, where Sani was caught in the act of stealing the motorcycle.

When the police apprehended him, he was found in possession of a bunch of motorcycle keys, which the police said he used to steal motorcycles.

The owner of the motorcycle was later identified, while Sani confessed to the crime and was subsequently charged to court.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest in a crime bulletin on Sunday.

He said, “On 12 October 2025, at about 11:45 a.m., a police patrol team attached to ‘B’ Division, Kontagora, in collaboration with vigilante members, intercepted and arrested one Mohammed Sani, 63, of Tungan-Gero, Mashegu Local Government Area.

“The suspect was arrested at Tungan-Kawo village while attempting to steal a Bajaj motorcycle. He was found with a bunch of motorcycle keys, which he used to steal motorcycles.

“He confessed to the crime, and the owner of the motorcycle was later identified. The suspect has been charged to court for prosecution.”

Motorcycle theft has remained a persistent crime challenge in Niger State, with the police frequently arresting suspects involved in stealing or dismantling motorcycles for resale.

Reports from the Niger State Police Command indicate that motorcycle thefts occur regularly across several local government areas, including Minna, Bida, and Kontagora.
