The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed off several chemical factories and shops in the Ojota area of the state for violating safety and environmental regulations.
The commission noted that the operators violated the Lagos State Safety Commission Law of 2011.
The Director-General of the commission, Lanre Mojola, said in a Sunday statement that officials had earlier inspected the factories and held several meetings with executives of the chemical dealers, with an undertaking signed by them on May 9, 2025.
“At the meeting, the operators agreed to implement a range of safety measures, including conducting a comprehensive safety audit of the market and organising workshops on hazard identification and risk evaluation
“They also agreed to provide serviced and accessible fire extinguishers in all shops, maintain an up-to-date inventory of chemicals, including expiry dates and ensure full compliance with personal protective equipment use,” the statement said.
“Despite the expiration of the ultimatum, the chemical dealers failed to act on the agreement reached with the commission,” Mojola added. “This left the commission with no option but to seal the facilities in order to safeguard lives and property.”
The commission has, in recent times, intensified surveillance to curb unsafe practices in factories, markets, and other high-risk facilities.
Last month, it sealed a seven-storey building in the Victoria Island area of the state for safety violations, including non-availability of safety barricades around the construction site.
