Federal Road Safety Corps nabs 250 drivers in Abuja for overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested more than 250 commercial vehicle drivers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) within two days for violating the directive that allows only one passenger in the front seat of taxis.

The FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, revealed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Helen Ntaji.

The arrests followed the launch of a new enforcement campaign launched on October 2, aimed at curbing overloading in commercial transport and restoring compliance with vehicle safety standards.

Theman said the exercise aims to restore passenger dignity and safety through strict adherence to traffic laws, warning that overloading prevents proper seatbelt use and compromises vehicle control.

He added that the enforcement, backed by mobile magistrate courts, would intensify from Monday, October 6, with full activation of mobile court locations across the FCT.

Meanwhile, FRSC records show that no fewer than 620,000 traffic offenders were apprehended nationwide between January 2024 and July 2025.
