In a concerted cross-border operation, the Nigeria Police Force has rescued a 24-year-old Ghanaian from a human trafficking syndicate and arrested five suspects, comprising both Ghanaian and Nigerian nationals in Ofada, Ogun State.
The operation was carried out by operatives of the International Police Annex, Force Criminal Investigation Department Alagbon, Lagos, following a formal request from INTERPOL Accra.
The police disclosed in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Sunday.
“The Nigeria Police Force, in its sustained efforts to combat crimes, has successfully rescued a victim of human trafficking, a 24-year-old Ghanaian national, and arrested five suspects in a well-coordinated operation by operatives of INTERPOL Annex, FCID Alagbon, Lagos, in Ofada, Ogun State,” Hundeyin revealed.
The statements noted that the victim and his father were allegedly lured into Nigeria in July 2025 by one Hassana Abban, a 25-year-old Ghanaian woman residing in Ofada, under the guise of facilitating travel to Canada.
The suspect, the police disclosed, allegedly obtained 40,000 cedis, approximately N4,960,000, for the supposed travel arrangements.
Upon arrival in Nigeria, police said the victims’ Ghanaian passports and mobile phones were allegedly confiscated, and they were coerced into engaging in activities linked to fraudulent online trading platforms.
After receiving the assistance request from Interpol Accra on September 15, 2025, the police disclosed that a special team tracked the victims’ location, culminating in their rescue on September 16, 2025, in Ogun State.
The operation, the statement disclosed, led to the arrests of the principal suspect and four accomplices: Odubuasi David (Nigerian), Yahaya Salifu (Ghanaian), Sherifa Haruna (Ghanaian), and Ebenezer Ofosu (Ghanaian).
“All five suspects are currently in custody, and further investigations are ongoing. The rescued victims have since been reunited with their families back in Ghana,” the statement said.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to regional collaboration in the fight against human trafficking and transnational crime, the statement added that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, applauded the operatives for their professionalism.
The IG further assured the general public and international partners alike that no criminal syndicate operating across borders would escape the long arm of the law.
