The National Examination Council has insisted that Kano is the best-performing state that ranks first in the whole of the Federation on the 2025 Council Examinations with 5.886 per cent and 39,351.
A report by a national newspaper has faulted NECO, giving Abia as the best-performing ranking state that comes first using the state code number 001 as a yardstick in their judgment, but the council rose to the occasion, describing the reports as misleading and not correct.
The newspaper said, “Kano candidates scored 50-16 per cent, showing they failed as only 49.84 per cent of its total 136,762 candidates scored at least five credits, including Mathematics and English.”
However, NECO said what the newspaper reported was “an analysis of candidates’ performance by states, not the final results of the total results and ranking of states and showing Abia State code number 001 is nothing but misleading.”
An official of the council who spoke on condition of anonymity told reporters, “That is why on the final performance ranking, Kano with its 015 code still becomes the first state while Abia State with 001 becomes 35th in the whole country.
A look at the performance sheets shows that Lagos State is the best in male performance ranking and is the first best state in the whole of the country with 43,538 candidates registering and 43,202 sitting for the examinations with 4.44 per cent and 30,203 having five credits and above in Mathematics and English.
And Kano on the male performance ranking has 62,223 registrations, 61,854 sitting for the examinations, and 28,308 scoring five credits and above in Mathematics and English with 4.100 per cent.
The NECO official said, “On female ranking, Kano becomes first, 137,338 registering and 136,762 sitting for the examinations, thereby having 5.020 per cent, and Lagos becomes second with only 4.93 per cent.”
Also speaking, the Director of the Kano Educational Resource Centre, Hajiya Rabi Inuwa, said the state governor paid over N3 billion examination fees even before the commencement of the examinations.
