Armed men attacked the students’ quarters of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic, Hadejia, located along the Malam Madori road in Jigawa State, on Thursday night.

The attackers reportedly assaulted several students and snatched numerous mobile phones. They also attempted to abduct some students but were unsuccessful due to the victims’ cries for help.

Speaking to PUNCH Online, an eyewitness who preferred anonymity said, “It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”

Another eyewitness, Tukur Danlami, added, “If not for the loud shouts and screams of the students, we wouldn’t have known what happened. Neighbours from nearby communities rushed to help, forcing the attackers to flee.”

Two BUPOLY students also recounted the incident in separate telephone interviews with our correspondent on Friday.

Manniru Magaji said, “We heard loud noises and commotion and saw people running away with phones in their hands. We were very scared.”

Another student, Yunusa Yaro, explained, “They entered our dormitory with weapons, attacked us, and stole several phones without warning. Thankfully, we escaped unharmed.”

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa State, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the attack occurred on Thursday night at an off-campus male hostel rented by students, not far from the institution.

“The location is quite isolated, which made it vulnerable to the assault by the unknown armed men,” he said.

Adam added that policemen stationed nearby immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the distress call.

“From our records, two students were seriously injured during the attack. They were promptly taken to the Hadejia General Hospital for medical treatment. As I am speaking to you this evening (Friday), they have been discharged by the medical doctor,” he disclosed.

The police spokesperson assured that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the culprits, while security had been reinforced around the polytechnic and its environs to prevent a recurrence.

Efforts to reach the management of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic for comments on the attack proved unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Garba Ibrahim, a prominent youth leader in the area, expressed deep concern over the incident.

“The people here are terrified. Such attacks disrupt peace and threaten the safety of our youth. We call on the government and security agencies to take urgent and concrete steps to protect the students and residents alike,” he said.

He further appealed for increased patrols and more security measures around the institution, assuring that the community was ready to cooperate fully with security agencies.

Though the attack has instilled fear among students, security agencies in the state have confirmed that measures are being taken to restore calm and ensure adequate protection in the area.
