Kebbi State National Assembly caucus on Friday called for the arrest and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over what it described as a breach of public peace during his recent visit to Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) said the caucus was responding to a petition dated Sept. 10 by Mr. Malami that accused Governor Nasir Idris and others of importing political thugs, foreign mercenaries and clandestine arms into the state.
The caucus rejected the allegations as “false, unfounded and politically motivated,” Aliero said.
The caucus also alleged that thugs accompanying Malami attacked the APC state secretariat during the visit, triggering clashes with party supporters.
Those claims remain unverified and were presented by the caucus as part of its justification for asking security agencies to investigate and prosecute any person found to have breached the peace.
Senator Garuba Musa Maidoki (Kebbi South) challenged Malami to produce evidence for his allegations, saying the caucus would not accept claims “without proof.” Maidoki also praised federal efforts against banditry and urged continued collaboration with security agencies.
The caucus urged security agencies to focus on genuine threats, invite Malami to substantiate his petition and take appropriate action if laws were broken.
It reiterated its support for Governor Idris and called for calm across the state.
