Edo State Task Force for the Protection of Government Property has apprehended a suspect for theft at the defunct Bendel Brewery premises.
In a statement on Thursday, Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, said the arrest was made during a routine surveillance operation carried out by the task force as part of its statutory mandate to monitor, secure, and protect assets belonging to the state government.
The statement read, “The suspect was caught in the act of removing iron materials from the premises of the now non-operational brewery, a property under the ownership of the Edo State Government. The suspect was immediately handed over to law enforcement authorities at the Area Command, Oregbeni Division, where he is currently in custody and undergoing preliminary investigation.
“The arrest underscores the state government’s unwavering commitment to deterring acts of vandalism, theft, and encroachment on public infrastructure. Authorities have reiterated that the protection of government assets remains a top priority under the administration’s broader strategy for institutional accountability and the rule of law.
“In line with its policy of openness and transparency, the Task Force has submitted a formal report of the incident to the relevant office for documentation and possible media engagement. This development comes amidst ongoing state-wide efforts to restore public confidence in government by strengthening security around state-owned facilities, many of which have, over the years, suffered from neglect and unauthorised access.”
He explained that government officials have commended the vigilance of the monitoring team and emphasised that the government would continue to take proactive steps to deter criminal activity around state properties.
Itua said the state government further encouraged members of the public to support its efforts by reporting suspicious activity and remaining vigilant as part of a broader civic responsibility to safeguard public investments.
