The Federal Road Safety Corps has secured the conviction of four recalcitrant drivers who were on Thursday, sentenced to a combined 35 days of community service by a Mobile Court sitting in Nyanya, Federal Capital Territory.

The Mobile Court, presided over by His Worship, Maryam Alhaji, handed the sentences following the drivers’ conviction for various traffic offences in contravention of Section 460(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and relevant provisions of the FRSC Establishment Act 2007.

This was contained in a statement signed by the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

“John Emenu, who committed the offence of dangerous driving and drivers licence violation (second time offender), was sentenced to 7 days of community service at the national headquarters of the Corps.

“Mr Ekpo Chukwunonso found guilty for attempting to corrupt Marshal on duty bagged 7 days community service at FCT Sector Command of the Corps; while Mr John Doe who was sentenced to 14 days at the headquarters too committed multiple offences including dangerous driving, road obstruction, and route violation among others,” the statement read.

Ogungbemide also noted that one Mr. Ajayi Adewoye, a second-time offender convicted of overloading and seatbelt use violations, was sentenced to 7 days of community service at the headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Service.

The convictions came after the FRSC conducted special Mobile Court operations, targeted at enforcing traffic compliance and ensuring safer roads across the FCT.

Reacting to the verdict, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, noted that the development underscored the existing collaboration between the Corps and the Judiciary “in ensuring that offenders are not only apprehended but also made to face the full weight of the law.”

The Corps Marshal further stressed that the FRSC “will not tolerate acts of indiscipline, assault on its men, and lawlessness on Nigerian roads.”

“He reassured the intensification of special patrols, surveillance, and enforcement activities nationwide to identify, arrest, and prosecute any motorist who chooses to endanger lives through reckless behaviour,” the statement added.
