The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has arrested 49 suspects during an early morning raid in Victoria Island.

The operation, led by the agency’s Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, began around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

It targeted areas like Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and nearby communities known for illegal activities.

Out of the 49 people arrested, 48 were men and one was a woman.

Akerele said the raid was based on complaints and tips from residents.

He explained that the goal was to clear out criminals like street thugs and pickpockets disturbing the peace in the area.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.

“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos,” he said.

He added that the task force now carries out enforcement operations at least three times a week to deal with illegal settlements and crime hotspots.

“The 49 suspects apprehended have been duly charged to court in line with the laws of Lagos State,” Akerele said.

He also stressed the task force’s mission to keep Lagos clean, peaceful, and safe for all residents.
