The Katsina State Commissioner of Health, Musa Funtua, has advocated protection of children against the dangers associated with tobacco intake.
Funtua made the call during a press conference marking World No Tobacco Day in Katsina on Tuesday.
Funtua said, “Good citizens of Katsina State, protecting our children is not negotiable.
“A society that allowed the exploitation of its youth by profit-driven tobacco companies is a society at risk, noting that the State Government, under Governor Dikko Umar Radda, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting public health from the dangers of tobacco.
“Good citizens of Katsina State, protecting our children is not negotiable. Therefore, let us choose health over harm, strength over addiction. Together, we can turn this message into a movement. Let us also join hands with government agencies, civil society, media, health workers, educators, parents and young people to say no to tobacco.
“No to manipulations. Yes to life, health and a tobacco-free Katsina State and Nigeria at large. Together, we can safeguard the future of our children and create a healthier Katsina for generations to come.”
The health Commissioner urged all stakeholders to educate and empower young people to become anti-tobacco advocates in their schools, communities and online.
World No Tobacco Day is marked annually on the 31 of May.
A day set aside by the World Health Organisation to raise awareness about the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies that reduce tobacco consumption worldwide.
The theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Protecting Children from the Tobacco Industry”.
